Project 8: Le Fauve Self-Portraits

A viewer can learn a lot about an artist by looking at their self-portrait.  Colors, expression, brushstrokes, materials, and technique can communicate their personality, location, and interests.  Students were given a mirror, pencil, and paper to draw themselves.  Facial proportion was taught by examining each feature of the face.  After learning about LeFauve style students painted themselves on a canvas board with acrylic paint.  By staring at ourselves with such intensity, we often notice details that we had overlooked in the past.  The experience also makes us examine the inside.  Who is really behind that face?  Students were asked to think about who they want to portray, what message they want to send about themselves through expression and color.
